Space Systems IV&V

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will conduct Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) based on the cost, size, complexity, life span, risk, and consequences of failure. The goals of NASA with respect to IV&V are to establish and apply criteria, tools, and methodology to evaluate and assess software risk for the purpose of identifying the appropriate level of IV&V.

The NASA IV&V Facility in Fairmont, WV, is tasked to manage the performance of all IV&V on software identified per the established criteria, and for any other safety critical software (as defined in NASA-STD-8719.13A) for programs and projects governed by NPG 7120.5A.

IRC provides technical and management services in support of the performance of software IV&V for all Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) managed NASA Space Science Enterprise (Code S) projects determined by NASA to require software IV&V. Code S remote science missions selected for IV&V vary in scope and duration. IRC has provided analysis and project lead services on the following projects since 2001:

  • GLAST
  • STEREO
  • THEMIS
IRC performs a variety of IV&V related activities for Code S missions, including, but not limited to:

  • Mission Requirements Analysis
  • Flight Software Requirements Analysis
  • Flight Software Design Analysis
  • Flight Software Code Analysis
  • Flight Software Test Analysis
